I’ll Buy a Computer For You Then Make a House Call or Office Visit and Set It Up Honolulu Hawaii and All of Oahu Text or Call Dual Certified Teacher Turned Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter Rick Kirkham 808.224.1870

This unique service offered by in-home computer tutor and troubleshooting expert Rick Kirkham is perfect for both the busy business person and the senior citizen who has trouble getting to the electronics store.

“This computer service really came out of necessity.”

Said Rick Kirkham,” Both senior citizens and small business owners would call me to set up their new computers. Sometimes the senior ended up with some ultra powerful gaming computer he/she was going to use to just surf the internet and check email. Business owners would purchase computers with 4gb of RAM and underpowered processors which would increase their work time due to the inefficiency of the computer.”

The Main Problem is People Walking Out of The Computer Stores Spending Way Too Much Money. Here’s What I’ll Do For You...

  • Talk to you to determine the best type and power level of your new computer. A business person needs a faster computer for example than someone who wants to just surf the internet and check email.
  • Go to the computer store and speak geekenese with the salesperson so he/she knows exactly what I need and won’t try to pull a fast one.
  • Find the best computer to suit your specific needs.
  • Call you for your approval.
  • Buy the computer.
  • Take the computer to your office or house.
  • Setup and optimize the computer.
  • Customize the computer to make it the most efficient for what you will do with the computer.
  • Give you computer lessons or software lessons such as Office 365 based on your individual needs.

Sounds Like a Time Saving Money Saving Service Rick! How Much Do You Charge?

One hour of my time for consulting with the computer store reps and purchasing your computer. My rate is $95.00 per hour. I charge the same hourly rate for setting up the computer which could take an additional two to three hours depending on the speed of both your computer and internet. Oh and naturally reimburse me for the computer.

To Be Honest…

it’s not always easy to get to my computer clients when they need a house call. If an in home computer client calls at 3 PM from Hawaii Kai with a question or computer or cell phone challenge, it’s a lot easier to see the screen to solve the problem than have my in home computer client try to describe what’s going on. Believe me I know having spent a few years doing that. From there it may be a simple remote computer or cell phone fix.

Because of that experience helping computer clients here on Oahu, solving their problems and making them happy here on Oahu, I've decided to offer my remote computer, cell phone and tablet training, tutoring and troubleshooting service to the entire U.S.. Without even advertising I already have remote computer clients all over the U.S. due to referrals from friends and relatives here on Oahu and Youtube instructional videos.

Aside from being one of the few computer experts on Oahu who is also an actual experienced, trained teacher, I spent 20 years in the hearing aid industry working with seniors explaining high-tech hearing aids to them for a living. I still help hearing aid companies due to my expertise in Noah software, but some of those time slots are now reserved for giving computer, cell phone and tablet lessons to seniors.

“Thanks for teaching me that CTRL + trick Rick it was worth the whole price of the lesson.", Senior citizen Honolulu Hawaii.

“Rick taught me a trick to easily find out what my wifi password is." School teacher Oahu.

"I got the job!" An in home computer client I taught how to use Microsoft Office so she could update her resume.

Rick, I Have a Nephew That Can Help Me with My Computer

Horror phrases senior citizens have told me during computer lessons that relatives and friends have said to them

  • Everyone knows that

I can think of very few things worse to say to a senior citizen computer student trying to learn something new.

  • I just showed that to you

Getting frustrated with mom or grandpa, dad or grandma does not help them learn any faster nor feel better about trying to learn how to use a computer.

  • You just can't learn this

You just called your grandma stupid.

I’m not saying your nephew, grandchild or daughter would say these things to you, but I’ve heard these stories of phrases used from A LOT from my senior citizen in home computer tutoring and training students.

Phrases I’ve Actually Used When Giving Senior Citizens Computer Lessons

  • Right mouse click for a menu. Left mouse click for an action.

A simple way to remember how to use the mouse.

  • Double click to open the folder just like when you pick up the folder and open it. That’s where the files are.

Relate what seniors already know. A good teacher explains a new lesson based on knowledge the student already has learned during his/her life.

  • I’m glad you did that while I was here. Now I can show you how to get out of it.

Every little slip of the keyboard or mouse is an opportunity to learn something different.

Shut Up

Not you. Me! A good teacher or tutor knows when to be quiet. The longer I talk, the less my senior computer lesson student learns.

Hands On Not Off The Computer

Giving computer lessons to seniors isn’t so much about explaining as it is doing. I’ll take my senior computer lesson student through the steps say of sending out an email, using phrases seen on the screen such “Compose". I’ll then have my senior computer lesson student do it as I quietly watch. When my student gets stuck, I give a little hint.

Yes I’m Positive About Computer Lessons

I help my senior citizen computer lesson students feel good about what they're doing and enjoy learning how to use a computer. I love seeing the faces of my senior computer lesson students when they've done something on their own and feel that sense of accomplishment. As a teacher with a background in behavioral challenges, I can tell you that both children and adults react to the same stimulus in a similar manner. adults are simply more repressed about their reactions. Both adults and children enjoy being praised for their efforts. Both adults and children also fear being chastised for their mistakes, which NEVER happens when I give anyone including senior citizens, in home computer lessons here on Oahu.

Overcoming Fear of New Technology

This method helps my senior computer lesson students overcome the fear of new technology. I’ve setup new computer for seniors after making a house call and still remember hearing the statement several times,

“I was afraid to take it out of the box until you got here."

Guess what the first lesson is when that happens? My senior computer lesson student sets up the computer himself/herself under my guidance!

You Fix It!

I let my senior computer lesson student make his/her own mistakes while I watch, then help the student correct the mistake. Small mistakes are going to happen when I’m not there giving an in home computer and cell phone lesson. If the mistakes happen while I’m there I can prepare my senior computer student for the small errors when I’m not there. I always say don’t be afraid to try something different. If you can’t get out of it, I’ll help you.

Knowing and Teaching Are Two Different Skill Sets Especially with Computer Lessons

One of my favorite compliments was from a retired ER doctor who said,

“I spent hundreds of dollars with computer geeks trying to learn how to use a computer. Then I met Rick, whose hands on positive approach was refreshing and efficient."

He even shared with me ITs (computer experts, but not teachers) would show him five or even 10 steps and then say, “Here now you do it."

This is the difference between knowing a skill and knowing how to transfer the knowledge of that skill in a positive, hands-on, fun approach. A good teacher is the difference between feeling frustrated and dreading to make a mistake in front of the person from whom you’re trying to learn and looking forward to your lesson, knowledge, skill and learning to correct those mistakes in a confident, relaxed manner even after your teacher is gone.

Rick, How Much Do You Charge for In Home Computer and Cell Phone Lessons for Seniors?

I charge $95.00 per hour or $75.00 per hour as a cash discount or prepay. Depending on what my senior tutoring student wants to learn it usually takes one to three lessons in one hour increments. I use one hour increments so as not to overwhelm my student.

How Often Should I Take In Home Computer and Cell Phone Lessons Rick?

Some people want to take computer lessons once a week. As a trained teacher I advise against this practice. This gives the senior computer lesson student one day to remember and six days to forget. If it’s affordable, I’d recommend three times in one week. This gives a day between lessons to practice on your own and to write down challenges you run across for your next in home computer and cell phone lesson.

The first part of the in home computer and cell phone lesson is always a review the previous lesson. I have you do things such as send an email, attach a photo, download a photo, find a photo on the computer etc.. I help with any corrections from the previous in home computer and cell phone lesson then move to the next lesson at a pace with which you’re comfortable. That’s a great advantage over group lessons where you may feel way behind or even way ahead of other computer class members.

Rick, Is There Anyone Cheaper Than You That Gives In Home Computer and Cell Phone Lessons?

Of course there is, somewhere! There's always someone cheaper trying to do the same job with the same quality.

You just have to ask yourself, “Why are they cheaper?"

My priorities in order of importance is to teach senior citizens how to use computers in an efficient, safe and fun manner and then pay my bills, in that order. If you cannot afford me please don't be embarrassed to let me know, I'll be happy to work with you.

Apple Computer Won't Boot to Login Screen

Follow these steps if your Apple computer won't boot or start to your login screen. Always consider hiring a professional. We are not responsible for loss of data or computer damage when you follow these steps.

If your Mac is stuck on the Apple logo

If you think you've waited long enough to know that your Mac is stuck on this screen, follow these steps.

Some of the fixes below are extreme. Make sure you have a backup and consider hiring a professional such as myself. See my article first on MacBook Pro Keeps Restarting 8 Ways to Fix Random Restarts. Some of the fixes such as resetting NVRAM or PRAM should be done first.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off. (Every Mac has a power button. On notebook computers that have Touch ID, press and hold Touch ID.)

Turn your Mac back on. If the issue persists, press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off. Then unplug all accessories from your Mac, including printers, drives, USB hubs, and other nonessential devices. You could have an issue with one or more of those devices or their cables.

Turn your Mac back on. If the issue persists, press and hold the power button once again until your Mac turns off. Then follow the steps in the section on howow to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility. It explains how to start up from macOS Recovery so that you can use Disk Utility.

How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

Use the First Aid feature of Disk Utility to find and repair disk errors.

Disk Utility can find and repair errors related to the formatting and directory structure of a Mac disk. Errors can lead to unexpected behavior when using your Mac, and significant errors might even prevent your Mac from starting up completely.

Before proceeding, make sure that you have a current backup of your Mac, in case you need to recover damaged files or Disk Utility finds errors that it can't repair.

Open Disk Utility

In general, you can just open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. However, if your Mac doesn't start up all the way, or you want to repair the disk your Mac starts up from, open Disk Utility from macOS Recovery:

Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon: Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Click the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.

Intel processor: Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these two keys until you see an Apple logo or other image: Command (⌘) and R.

You may be asked to select a user you know the password for. Select the user, then click Next and enter their administrator password.

From the utilities window in macOS Recovery, select Disk Utility and click Continue. macOS Recovery options with Disk Utility selected

Select your disk in Disk Utility

Choose View > Show All Devices (if available) from the menu bar or toolbar in Disk Utility.

Disk Utility: Show All Devices

Repair volumes, then containers, then disks

For each disk that you're repairing, start by selecting the last volume on that disk, then click the First Aid button or tab.

Click Run to begin checking the selected volume for errors.

If there is no Run button, click the Repair Disk button instead.

If the button is dimmed and you can't click it, skip this step for the disk, container, or volume you selected.

If you're asked for a password to unlock the disk, enter your administrator password.

After Disk Utility is done checking the volume, select the next item above it in the sidebar, then run First Aid again. Keep moving up the list, running First Aid for each volume on the disk, then each container on the disk, then finally the disk itself.

Disk First Aid: process complete

When you're done, quit Disk Utility. If you used Disk Utility from macOS Recovery, you can now restart your Mac: choose Apple menu > Restart.

If Disk Utility found errors that it can't repair

If Disk Utility found errors that it could not repair, use Disk Utility to erase (format) your disk.

Use Disk Utility to erase an Intel-based Mac

How to erase (format) built-in startup disk of an Intel-based Mac.

These steps do not apply to Mac computers with Apple silicon. If you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, follow the steps to erase a Mac with Apple silicon.

Before erasing your Mac

If using macOS Monterey or later on a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, follow the steps to erase all content and settings instead of these steps.

Make a backup of any files that you want to keep. Erasing your Mac permanently deletes its files.

Use Disk Utility to erase your Mac

Start up from macOS Recovery: Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these two keys until you see an Apple logo or other image: Command (⌘) and R.

If asked, select a user you know the password for, then enter their administrator password.

From the utilities window, select Disk Utility and click Continue.

Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar of Disk Utility. Don't see Macintosh HD? Click the Erase button in the toolbar, then enter the requested details:

Name: Macintosh HD

Format: APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), as recommended by Disk Utility

Click Erase Volume Group. If this button isn't shown, click Erase instead.

Disk Utility window showing Erase volume group confirmation

If asked, enter your Apple ID.

Optional: If you previously used Disk Utility to add internal volumes other than Macintosh HD, you can erase them individually using the same process.

When you're done, quit the Disk Utility to return to the utilities window.

If you want your Mac to start up again from the volume you just you erased, select Reinstall macOS in the utilities window, then click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. Learn more about reinstalling macOS.

If you don’t see Macintosh HD in Disk Utility

Your built-in startup disk should be the first item listed in the Disk Utility sidebar. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name. If you don't see it there, choose Apple menu > Shut Down, then unplug all nonessential devices from your Mac and try again.

If your disk doesn't appear in Disk Utility

If Disk Utility can't see your disk, it also can't see any containers or volumes on that disk. In that case, follow these steps:

Shut down your Mac, then unplug all nonessential devices from your Mac. If you're repairing an external drive, make sure that it's connected directly to your Mac using a cable that you know is good. Then turn the drive off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.

If Disk Utility found no errors, reinstall macOS.

Make this a last resort and make sure your files and photos are backed up. Also make sure you know all your passwords. You might want to hire a professional to do this.

If Disk Utility found errors and repaired them, restart your Mac. If the issue returns after restarting, reinstall macOS.

Computer Lessons - Why Hire a Trained Teacher? My Nephew Knows Computers

Recently an in home computer and cell phone tutoring client's friend in Honolulu Hawaii was concerned about computer and cell phone lesson retention. Here's what I told him....

I've said this many times. There's a HUGE difference between someone who knows how to teach a topic and someone who simply knows a topic. Here are just a few benefits you get from hiring a professionally trained educator for computer and cell phone lessons.

Retention of Computer and Cell Phone Lessons

This sounds basic but one tip for retaining information during a computer or cell phone lesson is review. I always make sure I review previous lessons before moving on to another topic.

Make sure the computer and cell phone tutoring student understands the relationship between the last computer or cell phone lesson and the new computer or cell phone lesson.

Don't be afraid to review a previously learned lesson while in the middle of another computer or cell phone lesson. When you teach correctly, it's a building block starting with very basic to more advanced computer and cell phone skills. A good teacher will explain or demonstrate the relationship between the two lessons.

DON'T TOUCH THAT!

Is something you'll never hear me say. A good computer and cell phone teacher has patience. He/She believes that every "mistake" is an opportunity to learn something new.

Smile

Again very basic. A good computer and cell phone teacher wants his/her in home computer and cell phone tutoring student to enjoy himself/herself. That starts with you!

Homework?

I've had my computer and cell phone clients ask me for homework. For a recent example, I told one of my in home cell phone tutoring clients to use Google Maps on her iPhone to get to work.

Don't Do For them Teach Them to Do

"I had one computer geek show me about 10 things at once on the computer then he looked at me and said now you do it." Jerry was one of my first in home computer tutoring students. He's a retired ER doctor. When he told me the above horror story I was astonished as to the difference between knowing and knowing how to teach.

Sometimes when I give my first lesson my in home computer tutoring student won't have the computer setup yet. More than once my client would smile at me and say

"I was afraid to take it out of the box till you got here."

Guess who set the computer up? That's right, my in home computer tutoring client. This helps to take away the fear of new technology and increase my student's self-confidence.

Assume Nothing

Horror phrases such as "everyone knows that", making the in home computer tutoring student feel bad and left out, will never come from the lips of a good, professional educator. Start with the very basics and move forward.

Catch Phrases

An experienced, professional in home computer and cell phone tutor uses easy to remember phrases such as:

Right mouse click for a menu. Left mouse click for an action.

X to exit.

Long press for a menu. Tap for an action.

And others to help increase retention of the computer and cell phone lessons.

Okay So I Didn't Quite Say All of That

At least not in one text message. I always get carried away when I talk about teaching.

If you'd like the benefit of a professional educator for computer lessons enter image description here

How to Keep Your Computer Files and Photos Safe in The 21st Century

Your cloud backup such as Google Drive, Dropbox and if you’re using Office 365, OneDrive is NOT enough to keep your files safe and secure any longer! Cloud backup will help save your files when your computer crashes, BUT it won’t help if many of the modern viruses infect your computer such as the Ransomware Encryption Virus.

Learn How to Use Linux, Linux Mint Cinnamon 20 Bootable 8GB USB Flash Drive - Includes Boot Repair and Install Guide

Linux Mint is more secure and faster than Windows. The operating system itself is FREE. It does however take a little skill to install it. So far I switched at least four of my in home computer clients here in Honolulu Hawaii and even Ewa Beach from Windows 10 with all of its bloated turtle speed software and bad updates to Linux Mint.

If you're in Honolulu Hawaii or anywhere on Oahu consider contacting me to have me install Linux Mint for you. I can replace Windows or even set up what's called a dual boot. That means you can run either windows 10 (or 11) or Linux Mint.

This is The EXACT Desktop Ring Light I Use for Zoom Meetings and Recording Videos

This is a GREAT light for recording videos. The 3 legged tripod sits on my desk taking very little space. The ring light has attachments for your cell phone to go right in the middle of the light. I use the ring light along with my computer for Zoom meetings and recording computer tip and academic lesson YouTube videos.

The desktop ring light has a dimmer to set the brightness level. I usually use the highest but, that may be too bright for some people. The LED ring light plugs into a USB port. You could easily get an adapter to plug it into the wall if that's your preference. As for me, I find the USB port very convenient.
