Computer Lessons - Why Hire a Trained Teacher? My Nephew Knows Computers

Recently an in home computer and cell phone tutoring client's friend in Honolulu Hawaii was concerned about computer and cell phone lesson retention. Here's what I told him....

I've said this many times. There's a HUGE difference between someone who knows how to teach a topic and someone who simply knows a topic. Here are just a few benefits you get from hiring a professionally trained educator for computer and cell phone lessons.

Retention of Computer and Cell Phone Lessons

This sounds basic but one tip for retaining information during a computer or cell phone lesson is review. I always make sure I review previous lessons before moving on to another topic.

Make sure the computer and cell phone tutoring student understands the relationship between the last computer or cell phone lesson and the new computer or cell phone lesson.

Don't be afraid to review a previously learned lesson while in the middle of another computer or cell phone lesson. When you teach correctly, it's a building block starting with very basic to more advanced computer and cell phone skills. A good teacher will explain or demonstrate the relationship between the two lessons.

DON'T TOUCH THAT!

Is something you'll never hear me say. A good computer and cell phone teacher has patience. He/She believes that every "mistake" is an opportunity to learn something new.

Smile

Again very basic. A good computer and cell phone teacher wants his/her in home computer and cell phone tutoring student to enjoy himself/herself. That starts with you!

Homework?

I've had my computer and cell phone clients ask me for homework. For a recent example, I told one of my in home cell phone tutoring clients to use Google Maps on her iPhone to get to work.

Don't Do For them Teach Them to Do

"I had one computer geek show me about 10 things at once on the computer then he looked at me and said now you do it." Jerry was one of my first in home computer tutoring students. He's a retired ER doctor. When he told me the above horror story I was astonished as to the difference between knowing and knowing how to teach.

Sometimes when I give my first lesson my in home computer tutoring student won't have the computer setup yet. More than once my client would smile at me and say

"I was afraid to take it out of the box till you got here."

Guess who set the computer up? That's right, my in home computer tutoring client. This helps to take away the fear of new technology and increase my student's self-confidence.

Assume Nothing

Horror phrases such as "everyone knows that", making the in home computer tutoring student feel bad and left out, will never come from the lips of a good, professional educator. Start with the very basics and move forward.

Catch Phrases

An experienced, professional in home computer and cell phone tutor uses easy to remember phrases such as:

Right mouse click for a menu. Left mouse click for an action.

X to exit.

Long press for a menu. Tap for an action.

And others to help increase retention of the computer and cell phone lessons.

Okay So I Didn't Quite Say All of That

At least not in one text message. I always get carried away when I talk about teaching.

Reason 8 of When to See Your In Home Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - It's been four months!

That's right I see my in home computer clients a minimum of every four months to

  • Clean your computer

  • Optimize your computer

  • and check security on their computers, tablets and cell phones

But Rick, I Have Antivirus Software . That Fixes Everything Right?

No. Cleaning and optimization should be done every four months including

  • Removing tracking cookies

  • Deleting temporary internet files

  • Removing bloatware from the computer's memory. Unnecessary programs loading into your computer's memory during startup slows down your computer NOT just on startup, but uses resources to run programs you want to run. These programs will then

    • Run slow
    • Cause videos to buffer
    • and even freeze your computer forcing a hard boot which is bad for your computer.
  • Checking for updates and security

  • As a professional, I'll hear a noise you may ignore but, I may recognize as your fan going out or a problem with the hard drive or SSD. If I stop this process while your computer is working it will save you

    • Money
    • Time
    • Computer files and photos

Reason 7 of When to See Your In Home Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - Your Computer is Running Slow

This slowing down of your computer will cause extra wear and tear on it actually decreasing the life of the computer. Especially if you have a hard drive and not an SSD which stands for Solid State Drive.

Reason 6 of When to See Your In Home Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - You've spent your hard-earned time trying to figure something out

This one's obvious. Your time is important and I enjoy teaching and helping people with their computers, cell phones and tablets. Just

  1. Text me or call me

  2. Schedule a time

Office

Spreadsheets

And other computer job-related skills

Reason 4 of When to See Your In Home Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - Grandma wants to learn how to use a computer or cell phone

I'm going to try to be gentle when I say this, knowing how to do something, does not mean you know how to teach something in a positive, fun and efficient manner. I'm a trained teacher who later became a computer expert. I still do a lot of substitute teaching and academic in home tutoring for students. If you noticed my photo, you see that I am a senior citizen. I relate well to seniors and they have fun talking their computer lessons.

Save yourself and your senior citizen relative some frustration and call me instead. If you set up the computer, I can even give a remote computer lesson if your senior citizen relative is not on Oahu.

Reason 3 of When to See Your In OFFICE Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - You or your staff need computer training

If you're in business time is money. This will sound weird but, even if it's a program I'm not familiar with, I'll be able to figure it out and teach you what you need to learn a lot faster than it does for you to figure it out on your own. Makes sense when you think about it. I know something is possible in a program, I just need to figure out how to do it with the UI (user interface).

I recently had that very thing happen with an accounting program an in home computer client needed help with. I showed him how to save time scanning by creating and going into the folder first where he wanted the receipts stored in the software. I'd never used the program before, but I understood how programs like that worked since I've used similar programs. I've seen a followed a lot of changes since 1993.

Reason 2 of When to See Your In Home Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - You're tired of Windows bad updates

See my article on Linux Mint. The Windows operating system replacement.

Reason 1 of When to See Your In Home Computer Tutor and Troubleshooter - You wrote your five questions down

Hold on I'll explain. Whenever I see in home computer clients who do not want to set up 1 to 3 lessons per week, I tell them to keep a piece of paper by their computer. And now back to your regularly scheduled computer help and cell phone lessons for both senior citizens and small business owners explanation....

Aloha I'm Rick Kirkham enter image description here

I've been in computers since 1993. Before I got into computers I went to Eastern Illinois University to become a teacher.

What does that mean for you...?

It means I not only understand computers, cell phones and tablets and how to troubleshoot them, it means I went to school to learn to teach. There's a HUGE difference between someone who has knowledge and someone who knows how to transfer that knowledge to another person in an efficient, effective and fun manner.

This is the difference between you or your grandpa and grandma or mom and dad having fun with their new computer, cell phone or tablet and being afraid of it while at the same time not wanting to bother you.

I've seen the frustration of learning to use a computer, cell phone or tablet on both sides

Hearing phrases from people who love you such as

"Everyone knows this" and "You just can't learn this"

Are horrible and yet, out of frustration because your niece or grandson doesn't know how to teach will sometimes say those hurtful things. Both sides end up feeling bad. You're afraid to make a mistake because you don't want your nephew or granddaughter to get upset with you. Nephew and niece are frustrated because they don't know how to teach something they were raised with and by the way taught how to use in school by professional educators such as myself.

Okay Rick, what do you charge?

For coming to your home or your grandparent's home and giving them professional, enjoyable computer, cell phone or tablet lessons I charge $95.00 per hour. I have a cash discount of $75.00 per hour which I hold the right to drop with new in home computer tutoring clients as my schedule fills up. So please call soon so you can save money while getting high quality computer, cell phone and tablet lessons from an experienced teacher.
